“The decision to spend a trimester abroad in Barcelona was one of the best of my life. The combination of an excellent academic program, the fascinating city and the numerous leisure opportunities made this experience unique.” A report by Master's student David Liebensohn.
UAB: where modernity meets tradition
The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) is spread over two campuses. The main campus, located just outside the city, is primarily aimed at Spanish-speaking students. Our campus, on the other hand, designed especially for international students, is located in the heart of Barcelona - right next to the impressive Sagrada Familia. The university building is architecturally impressive and is even a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Our group consisted of six students from accadis Hochschule: Alexa Bernnat, Jessica Wißler, Maximilian Peterseim, Jan Skarke, Nico Hemmer and myself, David. We got on really well right from the start and attended all our courses together. In terms of content, most of the courses were similar to those at accadis, but “Developing Creativity” was a special experience. Here we were encouraged to give free rein to our creativity using innovative methods. UAB places great emphasis on group work and presentations - perfect for our team of six.
Why a Semester Abroad and not an internship?
It was clear to me from the start that I wanted to spend a semester abroad. Barcelona was my preferred destination. Why? Firstly, because of the fantastic climate, and secondly, I wanted to improve my Spanish skills - even if I have to admit that this was only partially successful.
Another reason was my love for the city. I fell in love with Barcelona back in April 2022, during an away trip with Eintracht. The combination of metropolitan flair and proximity to the beach is simply unbeatable. We made good use of the beaches, especially in the first few weeks of our stay - whether it was to relax or for sporting activities.
Leisure fun and highlights in Barcelona
Our free time in Barcelona was incredibly varied. We all signed up to a gym near our university and apartments - it quickly became part of our daily routine. A new passion I discovered was playing Padel. Although I arrived with two tennis rackets, I never used them. Instead, I was on the padel court two or three times a week. It was not only a lot of fun, but also a great opportunity to get to know the locals and practice my Spanish.
Our beach days together enjoying the best weather were also unforgettable. Of course, visits to the FC Barcelona stadium were a must. The matches against Bayern Munich and the city derby against Espanyol were absolute highlights.
A special experience was the “La Mercè” holiday, which transformed the city into a huge festival. The human towers that were built during the day were impressive. The highlight, however, was the 30-minute fireworks display at Plaça Espanya, accompanied by music - an absolute goosebump moment that I will never forget.
Conclusion: A semester abroad that I recommend to everyone
The decision to go to Barcelona was absolutely right. For anyone thinking about a semester abroad: take this opportunity! If you choose Barcelona, I promise you will not regret it.
