Nature, Adventure and Studying: A Semester Abroad in Canada

semester abroad canada paul 25Undergraduate student Paul Wiener was the first accadis student to spend a semester abroad at Capilano University in Canada. In this experience report, he shares his impressions and gives valuable tips for future students who are considering a semester abroad in Canada.

Special features of Capilano University

Capilano University is located in the middle of a natural setting in the north of Vancouver, only about half an hour by bus from downtown. The campus is spread over several buildings, which cover a variety of specializations. Of particular note is the university's creative focus, which is reflected in many areas. The largest and newest building was built for creative artists. Opposite it, a new residential complex (residence) is being built, which will be available to students from the summer.

Leisure and sports facilities

Capilano University offers numerous leisure activities, including a free gym and various sports such as soccer, basketball and volleyball. Another plus is the large number of contact points where students can get help at any time. I was particularly impressed by this commitment towards the students.

Courses at Capilano University

During my stay, I took the courses People Management, Supply Chain Management, Project Management and Leadership, all of which I can recommend without reservation. At the outset, the Canadian academic routine was a little unusual, as it is not common in Canada to write one final exam per subject for the semester. Here, you complete many small pieces of work that are included in the overall grade and often include online quizzes, presentations, midterms and finals.

Structure of the lectures

The midterms mostly consisted of multiple-choice tasks that required good preparation, but were certainly doable. Finals usually cover the entire content of the semester. The structure here is similar to the midterms. However, the midterms and finals usually do not add up to more than 30% of the overall grade, so it is important to participate well in the individual components during the term. The lecturers were very helpful and easy to contact if there were any questions about the courses. The daily study routine was a change compared to accadis, but I really enjoyed it.

Why Canada?

Canada, the second largest country in the world, has always fascinated me with its impressive nature and landscape. My decision to go to Canada was also influenced by the recommendation made by my neighbor, who had spent some time there herself. As I had never been outside Europe before, Canada seemed like the perfect opportunity to explore the world.

Highlights of my stay abroad

Where should I start? We had many unforgettable experiences and traveled a lot - I can only recommend this to anyone. Even though such trips are often expensive, you should definitely take the opportunity.
My personal highlight was a camper tour through the Banff, Yoho and Jasper National Parks. This trip through the Rocky Mountains offered an incredible outdoor experience. Another big trip took us to Mexico. We spent ten days there in the region around Cancun and Mexico City. In addition to relaxing on the beach and by the pool, we also went on cultural tours to learn more about the country.
We also explored Vancouver Island and took two road trips: one north to Tofino, where we took part in a whale watching tour, and one to Victoria, the capital of British Columbia. Both trips are highly recommended. Another unforgettable excursion took us to Seattle, which is only three hours away by rental car. There we were able to gain our first impression of a major American city.
For winter sports enthusiasts, skiing in Whistler is a must. The best time for this is at the end of December, when the snow is at its best. A visit to Toronto is also worthwhile, preferably in summer or after the first snowfall. However, I would plan a maximum of 4 - 5 days for Toronto or combine the trip with a side trip to the USA, for example to New York.

Canada as the perfect destination for a semester abroad

Canadians are incredibly friendly people, so you will often be asked about your day by strangers. In addition, the administrative effort for a semester abroad in Canada is relatively low. Apart from the ETA, which can be easily applied for online, no special visa is required.

Conclusion

My semester abroad at Capilano University was one of the best experiences of my life. The combination of exciting courses, breathtaking nature and unforgettable trips helped me grow personally and professionally. Canada not only offers an excellent quality of academic study, but also a warm and open culture that makes it easy to feel welcome. I can only recommend anyone planning a semester abroad to take the plunge - it's worth it!
